QE Health’s new $19M purpose-built health and wellness facility will be officially opened by Hon Kiritapu Allan in Rotorua tomorrow.
The ministerial opening signals an exciting new era for the organisation, which boasts a fascinating 80 year history.
Kānoa – Regional Economic Development and Investment Unit (RDU) is a major funder of the new facility, alongside Rotorua Lakes Council and Rotorua Trust.
“QE Health has been an integral part of Rotorua for the last 80 years. The opening of the new facility, with the help of a $9.5M investment by central Government, will provide world-class services to patients and visitors,” says Kiritapu Allan.
QE Health CEO, Dr Aaron Randell, says it‘s pleasure to share the official opening with the minister, key stakeholders and the funders that made it all possible.
“Without the support of central and local government, Rotorua Trust and the wider Rotorua community, this phenomenal community asset wouldn’t have been possible; the event is a chance to recognise and thank everyone for their involvement,” says Dr Randell.
“It’s been a long journey to completion, but we are very pleased with the outcome and we know it will positively impact not just our Rotorua community, but the wider New Zealand public too.”
QE Health is New Zealand’s only clinically integrated health and wellness facility and specialises in geothermal treatments and therapies that combine the best of science and nature.
Dr Randell says as the health reforms progress, he’s hoping more New Zealanders will be able to take utilise the range of complementary holistic therapies available at QE Health, many of which are not offered anywhere else in Aotearoa due to QE’s access to Rotorua’s unique mineral waters and mud resources.
QE Health’s former building was originally built as a convalescence hospital in 1942 and was only ever intended as a temporary facility to help rehabilitate injured soldiers after WWII. Since then, the site has supported hundreds of thousands patients on their path to wellness.
The new 3,000sqm health and wellness facility will provide visitors with a much improved experience featuring a modern layout, a purpose built orthotics workshop, Pilates studio, hydrotherapy and geothermal pools, a 24-hour gym, and 13 comfortable and modern rooms for in-patient use.
The opening event will include a ribbon cutting and plaque unveiling.
